Why
I Want a Rilla Puppy - by Jim Engel
Several
years ago, in Washington State for one of
the famous Bouv Camp gatherings, I was looking for a demo dog
for the evening’s conformation discussion. Charmayne Heiden was there with a young bitch out of Bill
Hollinger’s breeding and Kathy had commented on how nice the
bitch was and how well she had done in her tracking introduction.
I
went off looking for Charmayne and this young Rilla bitch, equipped
with my trusty bag of pork, well knowing the way to the heart
of a dog. Rilla was not
especially impressed, and Mr. Bill Hollinger, himself and in
person, was called on to apply his professional handler talents
and demo her gait. She
moved very nicely, was good moderate size and had a really nice
expression. Rilla was still
not impressed, and it took most of the bag o meat and my utmost
charm to make friends, but it did come to pass. Rilla
has a couple of sharp dogs in her background, and it was good
to see that the suspicion was appropriate and based on a really
stable foundation.
That
evening I took her upstairs for the demo, stacked her, gaited
her in a large room with barely enough room to clear an aisle
to move her up and back. I pointed out, for the benefit of any “show” breeders
which might have been present, that her structure was correct
and moderate, with good stride and medium short back and the
square build as understood by the founders. Good
coat texture, correct color, nothing not to like.
I
encouraged this breeding because I wanted a pup, a female, for myself, because
I thought that this was an extraordinary young bitch. And so it has come to pass, we have Rilla puppies.
